Some Thoughts about Sitting Still…

Rethinking Circle Time
In many preschools and childcare centers, circle time feels complicated and stressful—mainly because children are asked to sit still. Parents often ask me, “How can my 2-year-old sit still during circle time?” My response is always, “Who said young children should sit still for 20 minutes?”

Why Sitting Still Is Challenging
I am always surprised by this question. Many parents come from top-rated childcare centers and brand-name schools. Staff told them their child was not paying attention, not sitting, or not socialized. Yet, little ones naturally find it difficult to stay still for long periods. Some kindergartners or four-year-olds will sit if a story, song, or visual captures their interest.
If centers restrict movement, children cannot develop social skills properly. Tom Hunter, a respected early childhood expert, explains in his NAEYC article that children need to move. Movement helps both the brain and body develop.

The Screen-Time Problem
Research by orthopedic specialists shows that certain injuries among teenagers are rising, likely because children sit too much in early childhood, often in front of screens. Experts recommend reducing screen time and encouraging outdoor play to raise smarter, stronger kids.

Active Learning at Sailors Preschool
Preschool teachers should recognize children’s need to move. At Sailors Preschool, circle time engages children of all ages with stories, music, and movement. Kids do not sit still by force. They pay attention naturally when activities capture their interest—not through bribes or threats.
We encourage hands-on learning and outdoor exploration. These experiences help children stay connected and focused, even while moving. The next time you want your child to pay attention, avoid telling them to sit still. Instead, present activities in ways that genuinely interest them.
